Professor Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman, a renowned name in the pharmaceutical field of Bangladesh, was born in Natore on December 31, 1960. He was the 5th child of Rashida Haque Chowdhury and Late Mozammel Haque Chowdhury.
Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman was always been a bright student. He attended various schools across the country due to his father’s government service. He was a cadet from Rajshahi Cadet College (RCC). Dr. Rahman was not only a meritorious student but also an all rounder. Apart from being a bright student, he was also a good debater, a sports person and active participant of various cultural activities. Dr. Rahman participated in many national debate competitions and won the best speaker award. He also served as the captain of Kashem House in RCC. Dr. Rahman appeared in S.S.C and H.S.C examination in the year of 1977 and 1979, respectively. He completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons.) and Master of Pharmacy in 1982 and 1983, respectively securing first position in both the exams from Department of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka. He was awarded with the Chancellor’s prize in 1987 for his excellence in academic career. Later, he went to Japan for higher studies with Mitsubishi scholarship and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kumamoto. Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman did his post doctoral research in 2003 from Sunderland University, England with prestigious Commonwealth scholarship.
Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman joined the Department of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka as a lecturer on 8 August, 1989. From there he had been promoted as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor on 1994 and 1998, respectively. He served as Professor from 22nd September, 2002 until to his last breath.
Prof. Dr. Rahman was married to Gulshan Ara on 21 October, 1994. They were blessed with their first child in 1996, and their second child was born in 2000.
Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman had taken the style of teaching to a level of art. Teaching was his passion. He regularly took Pharmaceutics, Biopharmaceutics and Regulatory affairs courses but the students who have participated in his class knew he was able to teach any subject without any previous preparation.
Apart from great success in academic carrier, he was also a champion administrator. Dr. Rahman served Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Society (BPS) as General Secretary. He was appointed as the director of Directorate General of Drug Administration from 13 April, 2004 to 13 April, 2007. He also served as the Chairman of Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka. Prof. Dr. Rahman was also the director of Biomedical Research Center, University of Dhaka. He was elected as the Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka on 18 October, 2010.
Prof. Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman was one of the founders of Department of Pharmacy, University of Asia Pacific (UAP) and also served UAP as a guest professor. He also served many other private universities as guest faculty like North South University, State University, Gono Biswabidyalay, Stamford University, University of Science & Technology etc.
Prof. Rahman was not only a man of great success, achievements and excellence but also a religious person. He performed Hajj in 2004 and also performed Umrah and Ehtekab. Dr. Rahman was associated with many organizations and was an active member of Old Rajshahi Cadet Association (ORCA), Cadet College Club (CCC), Shondhani. He was always into charity and good deeds.
Dr. Rahman was admitted in the hospital on 24 November, 2010 due to mild heart attack and then went through a bypass surgery. This great personality expired on 18 February, 2011 due to multiple organ failure after three months long fight in United Hospital, Dhaka.
Prof. Dr. Habibur Rahman was an asset to the country. He was a personality comprised of wit, wisdom, merit, humor, leadership, generosity, honesty and what not! His contribution in the pharmaceutical field of the country is unforgettable and incomparable.
